Daniel Wu

16-year-old Daniel Wu Rui Xian (from Taiwan) first realized that he was interested in art when he was in preschool. When the other children were throwing tantrums and basically doing nothing, he would always sit in a corner with a friend, doodling away with colour pencils on paper. When he started school, students were allowed to create art, using media such as clay and watercolours. That ignited his interest in art. Daniel felt that he could give full play to his understand in art, compared to academic subjects. This is still the case for him today.

Daniel’s watercolour painting of this lizard is one of our favourites. His techniques in pencil rendering and watercolour have never failed to impress.

There’s no denying that Daniel is a true artist! We had a chat with him to know more about him, what makes him tick and what he likes to do during his free time. Read on to find out:

1. When did you start art lessons?
I began formal art lessons at my high school, which I chose because it offered art classes. After three years of art lessons, I gained a lot of experience and picked up a variety of techniques. Although I did not continue my art education at senior high school, I learnt much and got to know many others who shared my interests.

2. Who is your favourite artist?
My favourite artist is Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh’s works convey emotions, and impact the soul while expressing emotions intensely. His works display an unique tranquility on the surface, which contrasts strongly with bold, curved strokes. His artistic style, filled with emotion, holds a strong attraction for me.

 3. What’s your favourite colour? If this colour has a smell, what would that be?
My favourite colour is aquamarine. Its scent should be like that of the waves, with the light fragrance of the ocean.

4. When do you usually do art? During the day or night, why?
I do art at night, as I am still a student and have to attend school in the mornings. I can only practice my hobby at night, after completing my schoolwork. This is also why I post images of my new works on Instagram in the wee hours.

 5. What’s on your playlist when you do art?
When I paint, I usually listen to Chinese and Japanese music. If I were to recommend a Chinese song, it’d be Matzka’s Back to the Roots Matzka is an indigenous singer from Taiwan, and his compositions and singing carry a strong reggae influence. However, this track is rather pure and simple compared to his other ones. The Japanese song I’d recommend is Dry Flower (ドライフラワー) by Yuuri. His singing technique is excellent and he can handle high and low notes with ease. The way he interprets his songs is also impeccable.
Back To The Roots 】,Matzka是來自台湾的原住民歌手,从创作到唱腔都能感受到浓浓的雷鬼风格,而这首回到原点有別于其他作品,反倒带点朴实及简单。

6. Describe your artistic style.
I don’t think I have a particular style. I have lots of room for improvement in terms of style and technique. Currently my style should be one that leans towards softer colours, while I try to make my strokes finer and strive for greater gradation in light and shadow changes. I hope those who see my artwork can do so in a relaxed state and be fully absorbed in it.

 7. Which one would you rather be, a sock or a duck?
I’d be a duck, since they seem so carefree and placid every day. Everyone should live life according to their own pace and preferences.

8. If you are Superman, what super power would you like to have如果你是超人,你希望自己有什么超能力?
I hope to be able to teleport, so I can, with minimal effort, take in beautiful views around the world and experience their myriad forms.

9. Besides art, what other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy listening to podcasts of ghost stories and lifestyle topics during my free time and when I paint. This helps me relax quickly and enjoy the process of creating images.

10. If art is a snack, what would that be? Why?
I think it would be a sandwich cookie. Every artist’s work has different layers like a sandwich cookie, and the audience can savour each layer while gradually understanding the ideas that the artist is trying to convey.

11. Artistic people tend to be a tad weird. Do you agree and why?
Artistic people tend to be more sensitive than normal folks. Those who study art are able to better appreciate beauty, and this makes us more sensitive towards our demands for beauty. These “excessive” demands compel some to gradually find their own style, and they appear different in the eyes of others as a result, but actually this is only because their perspectives are different.

12. What is/are your weird habit(s)?
When I paint, I like to prop myself up on my chair with a lot of blankets and pillows, so that I can be nearer the table.
