Thea Quah

Thea is a 14-year-old teenager (from Singapore) who realized that she had a keen interest in art during the pandemic in March 2020. Her father got her an Ipad specifically for drawing. And she’s been creating digital art since then.

When she was in kindergarten, she enjoyed drawing unicorns, princesses and mermaids.

This is a quick digital sketch she did using Procreate. She wanted to draw a person taking a photo of herself in front of the mirror.

This is Thea’s entry to our MASH THEM UP art competition. Her originality and colour pencil rendering of her character, Emotion, captured the hearts of the judges. Thea’s work won the third prize in category 2. You can see the winners and finalists of this art competition here.

Whatever Is Beyond
This is a scrap paper piece Thea made during CCA in Bowen Artists. The inspiration for this piece was a lost traveller wandering around in a starlight desert with fallen stars, facing the thick clouds with the moon peeking through. The atmosphere of this piece is supposed to be calming and comfortable.

Want to know Thea better? We asked her some questions to understand what’s going on. Read on to find out:

1. Do you enjoy doing traditional art more or digital art?
I enjoy digital art more as I find it easier to handle. It is also very convenient as most of the tools are already in the app.

2. Do you wish to pursue a career that is art-related in future?
Most likely, currently I’m quite interested in fashion and design.

3. What is your favourite subject to draw?
I love drawing in the style of surrealism, human figures and pieces with hints of melancholy.

4. Who is your biggest influence in art?
My biggest influence in art is friends whom I met on drawing platforms.

5. If lions could draw, what do you think they would draw?
I think lions would draw self-impressions, since our views of them are basically fierce and dangerous. Perhaps they would like to change our perception of them.

6. What colour would look really good on clouds if white is not an option?
Grey because they would be rain clouds.

7. Who would win in a fight between the right shoe and the left shoe? Why?
The left shoe would win, because most people think that the right shoe would win, making it over-confident and arrogant, and this attitude cause the right shoe to lose. Never underestimate the underdog.

8. Who would you prefer to have as your roommate? Leonardo Da Vinci or Andy Warhol? Why?
Definitely Da Vinci because I would ask him for tips on how he produced such exquisite and detailed masterpieces, which can then help me in my interest in semi-realistic art and surrealism.

9. What is your favourite medium to work with as an artist?
Digital art.

10. What makes a person creative?
The ability to think or invent something no one has ever thought of. A creative person also tends to have a very unique point of view.

11. What question would you ask the next featured artist?
If your art style had a name, but it can’t be your own name, what would it be?
